Tell Me It’s Not True

October 3rd, 2005 by Barry Freed · 2 Comments

Before I start ranting about this, I want to preface my post with the hope that this is a hoax. Hopefully someone was pulling a photoshop prank and somehow the Sun bought it.

But if it’s true, I am so mad.

Dog as shark bait

My friend Montoya forwarded me a link to an article in the Sun. The article goes on to say that on the French controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, stray dogs are used as live shark bait. They literally put hooks through their noses and drag them behind boats to catch sharks. They also say that a 6 month old labrador pup was found alive with a hook through it’s nose (just like the dog above).

I did a little bit of research, and some people are in fact claiming this is a hoax. But then, I found a video. I can still see how people think it may not be real, as the dog is very calm even when the vets are trying to remove the hooks, but I am convinced. I don’t know how you’d fake this.

This may help shed some light on the issue. Though the authenticity of your photo is inconclusive.

I don’t know if this photo is real. Sadly, I can say that dogs are used in the good old USA as “shark bait.” I knew someone while living in the Florida Panhandle that adopted a dog from the Humane Society and blatantly told me he was going to use the dog for shark bait. I asked him, “How could you do such a thing?” He actually thought I was asking how he would do it and he answered! They cut the dog along both sides, tie a rope to the neck, throw it in the ocean, then “tow” the poor thing behind the boat. I called the Humane Society and informed them of what was going on. I also called the local TV news channel. Thankfully they picked the story up and reported it. This man was called by the Humane Society and was informed that a complaint was made and told the Humane Society would follow up. He was VERY upset I had “spoiled his fun” and I had to live with anonymous phone threats for several years before finally moving. Yes, these types of people DO exist. They are sociopaths and live among us. They see nothing wrong with this! Sick…
