Lots of news today

April 4th, 2006 by Barry Freed · No Comments

Damn this is a busy news day. Since I don’t have any worthwhile stories of my own, I thought I’d just link to some news stories that are going on right now.

1. Tom Delay to resign from the house- Tom Delay is resigning. He was facing what was thought to be a difficult re-election…..you know, due to the, uh, controversy. Delay denied that the scandal had anything to do with it, instead b laming liberal democrats.

“I refuse to allow liberal Democrats an opportunity to steal this seat with a negative personal campaign,” DeLay said. “The voters of the 22nd district of Texas deserve a campaign about the vital national issues that they care most about and that affect their lives every day and not a campaign focused solely as a referendum on me.”

Mmkay. So he’s leaving because he doesn’t want those evil liberal democrats to talk about the, um, thing.

2. Moussaoui faces death penalty- The jury has decided that Zacarias Moussaoui caused at least one death on 9/11, so he now could be sentenced to death. I’m not sure of the Vegas odds on this one, but I’d bet he’s going down. And since he’s actually trying his hardest to get the death penalty, it would be a miracle if his defense can somehow convince a jury that Moussaoui is a wanna-be Al Qaida member. Best of luck.

3. Florida wins NCAA Men’s Basketball Title- Florida won last night 73-57 to beat UCLA for the national championship. I was asleep, and even if I was awake, I wouldn’t check it out. I don’t know why I find College Football exciting, College Basketball yawn-inducing. The only thing about this story that caught my attention was a line from the AP Story (on Yahoo News):

For 40 lopsided minutes, the Gators (33-6) were too big, too long and too quick for UCLA.

What?

4. 3 People Die in Boston Crane Collapse- When I got home from work last night, I turned on the news to find out that a construction platform fell 13 stories on Boylston Street crushing cars and killing 3 people. The platform was part of an Emerson College construction project by Boston-based Macomber.

5. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission is sick of complaints about having police arrest drunk people in bars- It’s a story that has been making national news. Police in Texas are going into bars and arresting people for being drunk. Apparently, the TABC has been getting lots of negative feedback, and in response, they published a Q&A sheet with the following intro:

Over the last several days, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) has been receiving
national press coverage over our agency’s recent Sales to Intoxicated Person (SIP) operations to reduce
DWI arrests and fatalities in Texas. Our primary goal is compliance with the laws regarding responsible
service and consumption of alcoholic beverages. Although we are pleased to have the opportunity to get
the word out about our program, some of the coverage has been negative, and it has resulted in phone
calls and e-mails to our agency. Following is some basic information about the laws in Texas and about
our operations. I hope this answers your questions, but if not, please let us know.
