Is there ever enough money?

by Barry Freed on April 13, 2006

This morning, on the way to work, we listened to an interview with Simon Cowell’s girlfriend. I know her name, but they basically introduced her as “Simon Cowell’s Girlfriend.”

Anyway, she was saying that on Extra (a show where she is a correspondant), they’ll be having an “exclusive interview” with Paula Abdul. In the “exclusive interview” Ms. Abdul will be talking about her new jewelry line. Apparently she’s been designing pieces for each of the American Idol contestants.

Which made me think…..

Is there ever enough money?

Why is it that every celebrity has to launch at least a handful of product lines?

Isn’t it enough to be super-rich? Is there a time when one looks at their bank account and says “Well, I’ve got tens of millions of dollars. Perhaps I do not need to whore myself out to the highest bidder to make a couple more.”

Guess not.

I said this to Kristina, and she said “Maybe they’re just bored.”

Point taken, but if you’re bored, why not do something with your time that isn’t focused on the dollar? I don’t think everything needs to result in cash.

Back to the “exclusive interview” about the jewelry line. Isn’t that really just a commercial? I am willing to give Simon Cowell’s girlfriend an exclusive interview to talk about TellHimFred and LawFirmBlogging.

So onto the line.

A glimpse of Paula’s official web site shows you that she’s hawking more than just jewelry.

Product One:
The Paula Abdul MP3 Player.

From the site:

The Klegg Mini plays hours of digital music with extraordinary sound quality! With the Klegg Mini Color Display MP3 player, view your favorite photo collection in an MP3 player and share the memories with your loved ones. This stylish and feature rich device will make you want to take it everywhere! And it fits on a key chain!PRICE HAS BEEN REDUCED.

Awesome. I like sharing my memories with loved ones (as well as complete internet strangers of course). Maybe this product is for me.

I also have keys. One of my biggest annoyances is that I have all these keys in my pocket, and nothing to hold them together. And there are many times when I think my keys would benefit from a catchy pop song.

And what’s this? The price has been reduced? I am there.

Product Two:
The Jewelry Line.

It’s coming soon to QVC. Unfortunately I can’t see what it looks like, but boy am I excited. If it’s good enough for MC Skat Kat, it is good enough for me.

Product Three:
The Cheerleader Workout Tape.

From her site:

Cheerleaders
Please visit my sister site, CardioCheer.com for the Fun New Workout that will make you Cheer.
Developed by me, America’s most famous cheerleader, this 5-disc DVD set offers, for the very first time, a package that shares – and breaks down – the training techniques, moves, skills and drills of professional. It’s everything a cheerleader needs to tighten the body, increase flexibility, add punch to jumps and take her performance to new heights. It’s also a great tool for anyone who wants to lose weight and get into tip top shape with a workout that’s fun, energizing and entertaining.

Well, if you want to be a famous, flexible cheerleader, why wouldn’t you pay $80 for this tape? You’d have to be out of your mind to miss out on this offer.

Product Four:
Skirtz

From the site:

The Skirtz Collection

Paula Abdul’s new Skirtz collection consists of two lines, Cheer and Dance. Each line was athleticly
inspired by Paula’s Dance and Cheer career and also serves as inspiration to young girls.

The “Dance” line

Unfortunately, there are no photos of paula in either of the outfits. Must be coming soon.

Keep chasing that dollar Paula. You’re only one paycheck away from being, uh, well, still a multimillionaire.
