I took Friday off for my second move. Here was the plan:
9:30 AM- Pick up the truck in Everett
10:00-11:00 AM- Pack the truck with Robyn.
11:00 AM- The guy I hired from Craig’s list shows up to help me load the heavy stuff
12:00 PM- Bring the truck to the new place
2:00 PM- Bring back the truck
What really happened:
9:30 AM- I go and get the truck. Robyn rides with me, and we get back to Allston at around 10:45. We start packing the truck, and by 11:25, I started getting nervous about the mover. We’d emailed back and forth at least 5 times. In fact, here’s the exchange:
My Post:
One Mover Needed Tomorrow (8/4) for easy move (Allston)
I’m getting a truck tomorrow morning for my move from Allston to Revere, and would like to hire someone to meet me at my place in Allston tomorrow morning at 11:00 am.I will be packing most of the truck before that, and will just need help with a couple of things (a dresser, a bookcase, and a coffee table). We’ll just need to take them down a flight of stairs and into the truck. After that, I’ll just need help unloading the items in Revere.
I have to have the truck back at 2:00 pm in Everett, so this will absolutely take less than two hours.
If you are interested, please email me your rate and your phone number.
Thank You.
Immediately I got an email:
I have done this before many times I would charge $60

I replied:
Can you be here in Allston at 11:00 am?
He responded:
I can do you need me earlier? And its just those 3-4 items correct being
moved?
Again, me:
There’s more being moved, but I only need a hand with those items. So
if you wanted, you could drive over to Allston, help me with the 3-4
things, follow me to Revere, unload them, and take off.
Him:
Sounds good unless you need a hand doing anything else. Whats the addresses?
Then I sent him the address and got a confirmation. We exchanged phone numbers, and he said he’d be there at 11. I even sent directions.
So, it’s 11:30. I have to get the truck back at 2pm. I called mike at least 5 times, leaving messages, etc. He just didn’t show up. Robyn and I had to move everything ourselves.
By 1:00, we were done and finally left Allston. Robyn wanted me to drive her to get her car on the way. There was absolutely no way we were getting the truck back by 2. Her car was parked in the parking lot where I picked up the car, and when I pulled in at 1:30, the guy who owned the truck called me, asking if I was almost done.
I told him that I still had the truck full and that we were on our way to the new place. I told him I’d call him as soon as he was done, as he had someone that needed the truck ASAP after I was done. He was going to pick up the truck at the new place as soon as it was unloaded.
Seconds after I hung up with the truck owner, I see a guy motioning to me in the parking lot, telling me to stop. He was the guy that was taking the truck after me, and he REALLY wanted that truck immediately. I gave him the address, and told him he could meet us there and he can have the truck as soon as we were finished.
Not ten minutes after pulling in to my parking spot at the new place, three people show up: the truck owner, the guy who was taking it next, and a woman. They helped us unload the truck, and we were completely unpacked within 15 minutes max.
So, although the mover completely screwed me over and never called back, everything worked out in the end. I’m off to Craig’s List to warn everyone about Mike, the mover who does not show up.
