The $500,000 Challenge

September 21st, 2006 by Barry Freed · 1 Comment

So the other day I was thinking about what I would do if I had $500,000. That made me start thinking about how I could actually get the half mil. Though admittedly I don’t have the answer to that yet, I have been doing the math.

How am I going to get to $500,000?

1. Ads: You’ve probably noticed that I have Yahoo ads on this and my other blogs. I don’t think I can talk about how much they generate per Yahoo’s agreement, but let’s use a hypothetical here with some nice round numbers.

Let’s say the ads generate $1.00 per click. To get to $500K, I’d need 500,000 clicks. Easy enough. But let’s say that I get 10 clicks per day, which means it would take:

500,000 clicks / 10 daily = 50,000 days = 137 years.

2. Hourly Work: Let’s say that I charge $50/hour for my web site work.

$500K / $50 hourly = 10,000 hours = 417 days (24 hour days)
or
1250 Days if going by 8 hours per day (3.42 years)

3. Per Day: If I were to offer services on a daily basis, I would have to make:
$500K / 365 = $1,369.86 per day
$57.08 per hour if going by a 24 hour day.
$171.23 per 8 hour day.

4. Selling Elmo:
Yesterday I got an email from my dad, telling me about the new Tickle Me Elmo doll. Apparently it just came out and it is going to be this year’s impossible-to-find Christmas item. Like the previous Elmo and the Furby, people who stockpile the toys will be able to sell them at a huge profit on eBay and in local newspapers. So, let’s say I’m able to pick up some elmos.

Cost: $40.00 each

and let’s say I can sell them at $150.00

$150.00
- 40.00
_______
$110.00 profit

With a $110 profit, I would need to sell 4546 Elmos. Which means I’d have to have startup cash to buy all the suckers. To be specific, I’d need $181,840. And I’d have to store them somewhere, which could be a problem.

Here’s what they look like:

Here’s how many I’d need:

5. Selling things- Now, I don’t own anything that is worth anywhere close to $500,000. So I’d have to produce something. And I’m wondering, what would be more realistic? Selling:

500 things at $1000 each
or
5000 things at $100 each

I’m open to any other suggestions anyone may have. I thought about collecting cans, but I’d need 10,000,000 of them. That’s too much.

I’d love to hear some ideas.

Hehe. I can’t think of any ideas, but I love the many Elmos. :)
