A New Phone Scam

October 17th, 2006 by Barry Freed · 14 Comments

(727) 683-1119.

Remember that number. If someone calls you from it, don’t answer. And if they call you every day trying to push travel deals on you, just ignore them. Hopefully they’ll go away.

For the last week, I’ve been getting at least 2 calls a day from (727) 683-1119. They call themselves Travel Agents Direct, and how they got my cell phone number is a mystery to me.

Apparently this is a scam company that offers free travel to Florida, which actually costs you $400. From looking online, it seems like they get your bank information, then just drain your account. I’m going to have to go to my bank today to make sure that hasn’t happened.

Anyway, this morning they called me and rather than answering my cell, I called them back from another line. I asked them to please remove my number. The woman on the line just said “We will be placing your number on our do-not-call list immediately. Should you have any questions, or if you need…” click.

I guarantee I’ll get at least 3 more calls in the next 24 hours.

More info on this scam is available here.

Yeah, I got a call from this number twice on my cell phone, which I hardly ever use. I did not answer the call because I did not recognize the number. How did they get my cell number? I hardly ever give it out. Only my close friends and family have it.

Same here….I live in California and they are calling me but I have yet to answer….I’m tempted to answer it and mess with them or even call them back as an “athority”:) I know they are based in Florida somewhere. Sucks….what can we do.

Me as wll. I live in texas and they’ve been calling my vell about twice a day, they asked for the namme of my bank, that threw up the red flag to me because if they were affiliated with my bank they would hav had that information, glad i hung up when i did. They literally had all of my information. i guess i should be keeping an eye on my checking account now…

One other thought, though it’s not the most moral solution out there. Find any form online where they ask you your phone number, and just keep entering that number. That should put them on LOTS of mass calling lists and could tie up their lines. Of course, you’d have to do this on a massive scale, but it could be done.

I got a call from 727 683-1119. A young male ask me about my Bank information so that I could get my $100.00 gas free give-away. I told him I was not interested in participating.

I just got a call from this number, I didnt recognize it, so I did a google search and it brought me to this site. Im a little nervous! Should I call the number back?

I would most likely ignore it for now. Just based on the idea that if they don’t get in touch with you, they don’t have confirmation that they’ve got a “live one”. But keep an eye on your bank accounts!

I recieved a call from them. I did not catch on at first, and I told them what bank I was with. When they started rattling off numbers and asking me for information I hung up. Am I ok, or should I let my bank know about this. These people should be in jail!!!

2-16-07. Same story as the rest of you. I was at work, picked up my cell, heard the words “Your credit card has entered you…” and hung up. Anything I need to do?

they called and I didn’t answer. However, I was expecting a call from Florida so I called back. Someone immediately answered and had my bank account #, offering $400 worth of airfare. They knew my name! Sickening! I asked them how they knew that number and they said “it’s standard information” and i said the hell it is, I asked them is this a telemarketer. finally he said it was and asked me if I wanted to be removed and I said yes. I tried to call backed and got an automated machine which I didn’t want to bother with.

I have recently booked airline tickets with orbitz via sidestep.com…. has anybody else used this, do you think they are connected?

I googled the number(which is how I came across this site). I answered the phone and talked to a lady who wanted to send me free coupons. They mentioned nothing about my bank account but as soon as they wanted info from me such as address and the like I quickly end the conversation.
