Parents Weekend

October 23rd, 2006 · 2 Comments

I tried to write this post twice already with absolutely dismal results. Some days it is really easy to write a lot. I’ve had days where I end up writing 3 or more posts, but then there are the days like today when the words just don’t want to come out.

I wanted to do a recap of this weekend- my parents visiting, the gallery opening, getting hopelessly lost last night on the way home from the suburbs, but no matter what I wrote, it just wasn’t interesting!

So, rather than even trying to put lipstick on a pig, I’m going to just move on…..

Parents Visiting:
This weekend my parents came out to visit. I had a great time seeing them, and I’m really glad they came. Usually I just drive out to NY to see them for a weekend, but it was a really nice to have them out here.

Gallery Opening:

The opening of the newest Gallery of Social and Political Art show opened on Saturday night. If you’re interested in checking out the show, definitely let me know in the comment section……..

Last Night:
I went to the great Northwest to see Tracey, and on the way home I thought to myself “I’ve been here before, I don’t even need to look at the directions on the way home. I mean, I got here without getting lost, should be about the same on the way back, right?” You would think. But I am hopeless when it comes to navigation. I ended up getting ridiculously lost, but I didn’t mind. It was a Sunday night, I wasn’t in a rush, and had plenty of gas in the tank, so I didn’t care. I got to see Tewksbury, Woburn, lots of trees, then I finally found 95 South, then Route 2. As soon as I saw an exit for Cambridge, I took it: at least I know where that is.

Today:

Today started off fine. I got to work later than I’d like, but it was no problem. Got some coffee and started to write some code. To make a long, boring, technical story a little bit shorter:

I’m moving one site from a web server I built to another because it takes up way too much space and bandwith for us to host internally. But doing so means I have to make a LOT of database changes. So, if there are, say, 10,000 files on the site, I have to change at least 5,000 of them to reset the passwords, change the database and table names, etc.

With me so far? Good.

Now, this kind of work is not rocket science. It’s mostly repetitive and time-consuming, but it’s easy. So, while I was working away, I figured out a way to write a script that would completely automate the entire thing for me. And here’s the shocker: it worked!

So, I’m all proud of myself, doing the “I’m the smartest man alive!” chant in my head, when I decide it’s time for lunch. I brought some Chef Boyardee something with me for lunch (Thanks, Mom). And as I’m giving myself the “I’d like to thank you all for this honor…..I never knew that the Nobel Prize was something I could have achieved in my lifetime…..”

Splat.

Chef Boyardee tomato sauce all over my favorite shirt.

To wrap up this random post:

1. I am not the smartest man alive.
2. They do not give the Nobel prize for writing a script to automate a search and replace.
3. I am not good with directions. In fact, I’m useless.
4. It was awesome to have my parents come to visit.
5. If you’re having fun, and you’re in the right frame of mind, getting lost isn’t a big deal.

The sauce should come right out of that favorite shirt if you pre-treat with a bit of your laundry detergent or Spray’nWash. Just don’t let it sit around too long. The trick is NOT to put it in the dryer with any remaining stain-treat again and scrub a bit and then rewash. It was so good to see you!!!!!!!!!! Guess I know where your talent for getting lost comes from after Saturday but don’t ever say I just said that.
