Absolute Beat Down

January 9th, 2007 by Barry Freed · 4 Comments

Things weren’t going right.

When I woke up yesterday, I was lethargic and foggy. Waking up at 4:30 am was not how I wanted to start the day I’ve been looking forward to all year.

You see, last night was the National Championship Game between my beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and the underdog Florida Gators. Ohio State was favored by 7 and had an undefeated season. They were ranked #1 in the nation all year.

When I left for work, I folded my #47 Ohio State jersey neatly and put it in my bag. My plan was to go to work, then meet up with Evan to watch the game somewhere. Well, this is when things started to go wrong.

Signs that Ohio State was going to lose (or that I was about to have an awful day).

1. Access log gone- I don’t want to go into details or get overly technical here. But one of the sites I work on gets a LOT of traffic. And the guy that writes all the content for that site is very, very into his stats. I mean, INTO them. Every month I have to produce charts, graphs, analysis, predictions, etc. based on his site stats.

To create his stats, I have to run the site’s access log through a piece of software. The access log is just a file that records every visit to a site, every page view, where it came from, etc.

Well, our host lost the file for December. It’s gone. There’s no getting it back. So now I can’t do his December stats, which mean I can’t do his yearly stats, which mean I can’t compare them to previous years, etc. Awesome.

2. Site Compromised-  After that, I got an email from another web host I’m using. I get a message that a site we’re submitting for an award……well, it’s been hacked. Someone gained root level access to the site and destroyed the file system. I now have to migrate the site to a new server immediately before anyone notices (the judges). Awesome.

3. Dad called- The last time Ohio State won the national championship, they were playing Miami. Miami was HEAVILY favored. No one (but me) seemed to think Ohio State had a chance. Right before that game my dad called me and told me he didn’t think Ohio State had a chance. Fast forward to last night. Right before the game, he called and told me that he thought Ohio State would win.

Uh-oh.

4. The kickoff- Ohio State ran back the kickoff for a touchdown. I got a text message from a friend that said “I’m not even going to watch this massacre.” Jinxed.

To be completely honest, Florida was just a better team. A LOT better. Ohio State didn’t belong on the same field with them. It was like watching a completely different team.

A day like yesterday doesn’t just sting, it makes you appreciate how people turn into conspiracy theorists. Everything that could have went wrong did. And yes, I realize it was just a game between two football teams that I have absolutely no control over. And my day could have been a LOT worse. I understand that. But ouch.

Bet Settling Time:

1. Kristina is the leader of the free world.

2. The Florida Gators are the best college football team ever.

3. Urban Meyer is superior to Jim Tressel.

If Ginn had played and not been on the sideline w/ crutches most of the game, it may have been a much different game.

Don’t forget our beloved Patriots, when they start that game on Sunday, you’ll feel a lot better.

[...] I’m not a gambler, but I had mentioned a few days ago that I should bet on this game, just because the odds were so stacked against us.  Last night, I was hitting myself for not listening to this genius piece of advice.  The only bet I made was based on pride, and here is me reaping my rewards.  You have to look pretty far down the entry to see my prize.  Don’t ask me why I chose this phrase, I was in a hurry and needed something insane to reflect the insanity of our win. Well it could be worse my Colorado Buffaloes were 2-10 this year. Pray that Ted Ginn stays for his senior year and the Buckeyes will be just fine.
