While I haven’t seen most of these movies, I wanted to post the nominees here. Since it’s “Breaking News,” it gives me an opportunity to do a make-up post for yesterday with little effort on my part.
Best Picture
The Departed
Babel
Letters From Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen
My Pick: Little Miss Sunshine.
I really liked that, though I also liked the Departed. I think Little Miss Sunshine was one of those really subtle movies that Oscar voters really like. I’m pulling for the little one.
Best Actor
Forest Whitaker (”The Last King of Scotland”)
Leonardo DiCaprio (”Blood Diamond”)
Ryan Gosling (”Half Nelson”)
Peter O’Toole (”Venus”)
Will Smith (”The Pursuit of Happyness”)
My Pick: Peter O’Toole.
Why? Well, I haven’t seen any of these movies, so I’m just picking someone and going with it.
Best Actress
Helen Mirren (”The Queen”)
Judi Dench (”Notes on a Scandal”)
Penelope Cruz (”Volver”)
Meryl Streep (”The Devil Wears Prada”)
Kate Winslet (”Little Children”).
My pick: Judi Dench.
Again, haven’t seen a single one of these movies, but she wins everything. So why not her?
Best Supporting Actor
Eddie Murphy (”Dreamgirls”)
Alan Arkin (”Little Miss Sunshine”)
Jackie Earle Haley (”Little Children”)
Djimon Hounsou (”Blood Diamond”)
Mark Wahlberg (”The Departed”).
My pick: Alan Arkin.
The one complaint I had about Little Miss Sunshine is that his character wasn’t in it enough. I thought he made the movie.
Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Hudson (”Dreamgirls”)
Adriana Barraza (”Babel”)
Cate Blanchett (”Notes on a Scandal”)
Abigail Breslin (”Little Miss Sunshine”)
Rinko Kikuchi (”Babel”).
My pick: Abigail Breslin.
Just see the movie.
Best Director
Martin Scorsese (”The Departed”)
Clint Eastwood (”Letters From Iwo Jima”)
Stephen Frears (”The Queen”)
Paul Greengrass (”United 93″)
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (”Babel”).
My pick: Scorsese
How could he not win? It’s time. Though it would be funny if he didn’t.

I think Little Miss Sunshine will win a lot, and I also think Blood Diamond will win more than you think it will. It was a great film and Leonardo DiCaprio actually did his job superbly. He’s, like, a real actor now.

I haven’t seen Blood Diamond, and I most likely never will. Seeing DiCaprio say the words “Bling Bling” in the preview is all I need to see. I simply cannot see past that.

Babel will win Best picture, because the Academy loves depressing message movies (funny, I just ranted about this last night in my own blog). I hope and pray that Scorcese will finally take it home for direction, but suspect Eastwood will beat him, as the Academy also seems to love everything he does. He could take an especially impressive shit and the Academy would give it the lifetime acheivement award simply bc it fell out of Clint’s ass. Mirren for best actress, Whitaker for actor, Hudson (bleh) for Supporting actress and I think you may be right about the winner for supporting actor, although Eddie Murphy may also take it (snerk).
