Do Newscasters Actually Do Anything But Read?

February 20th, 2007 · No Comments

If you haven’t heard, there’s a planned merger between XM Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. This story has been picked up by EVERY news outlet in broadcasting. And every single newscaster is saying the same thing:

“Now Oprah Winfrey and Howard Stern will be sharing the same airwaves.”
“Now consumers won’t have to choose between Howard Stern and Oprah.”

I’m serious….is there one person from the AP that writes the stories and hands them to every news outlet in the country? Is it against policy at the news outlets to actually come up with their own stories? And if so, can they at least use a different angle?

Oprah Winfrey does exactly ONE HOUR of radio per week. One. Howard Stern probably does 720 hours per year.  That’s not a value judgement, it’s a fact. So is there actually someone out there that says…”You know, I really like Oprah Winfrey as well as Howard Stern. But they are on two separate satellite networks. How do I choose?”

It’s just so frustrating to me that rather than looking critically at the news they are being fed to read, today’s newscasters would rather repeat illogical statements.
