Um, hi. Now who’s cheating!?

November 5th, 2007 · 5 Comments

Yesterday’s Pats-Colts game was a doozy. A close match, a real defensive struggle, big plays on both sides of the ball, from both teams, and a dramatic ending that left all of us in New England feeling drained, but happy.

HOWEVER…

Just weeks after Tony Dungy expressed his “sadness” at “Videogate”, he and his “good guys” organization are at the heart of a new NFL cheating scandal, which has already been dubbed “Crowdnoisegate”. During a second down play, a pass to Randy Moss, you can clearly hear, behind Jim Nance’s play-by-play, the sound of the crowd all of a sudden go all wonky digital for about 3 seconds…then cut out entirely. Listen for yourself and tell me what you think. moss_catch_audio.mp3

I mean - this isn’t the first time a team has done this. Ahem… Redskins. But what the hell!?

Sounds pretty crazy, right? This is, of course, on top of the WILDLY inaccurate calls made against the Patriots by the officiating crew. CBS’ anchors are never willing to openly question the refs in a game…but even Phil Simms was forced to say things like “…very questionable call…” and “..I’m not sure that’s pass interference…” etc. Is it just me or did it seem like the officials in this game had an agenda?

But hey, Tony Dungy, I’m not through with you. - it’s time to eat some crow. Time your organization shed its ill-deserved reputation as a “good guy” team. Time you paid several hundred thousand out of your own pocket for screwing with your opponents’ ability to play the game. In short: Colts suck. Go Pats.

EDIT: 9/7/2007

According to an NFL spokesperson the sounds we heard were due to a bad feed from the CBS in-stadium audio feed. And I’m still not sure I buy it.  But hey, in the end, who really gives a flying fragment of fish fingers? The Pats are going 16-0. Don Shula and the Dolphins were investigated for tampering in the 1972 season, played 14 games, and their opponents had a combined win pctg. of around .400.  I don’t care what that leathery old madman has to say about anything - when the Pats do this, it will be the greatest team accomplishment in football.

Sounds like a CD skipping for a couple seconds right after Nance says “2nd and 11.”

Then yeah, it certainly cuts out.

Hoffa’s right, Dungy, time to eat crow. Maybe your QB can tenderize it with his tears.

It’s feedback. They’re using mikes on the crowd to amplify their noise, but the mikes also picked up what’s coming out of the speakers. Wow. Guess Saint Tony ain’t no good Christian after all.

I don’t know, Andrew. It does have a distinctive CD-skipping sound. Either way, though - it’s cheap and it’s illegal.

Let them play their amplified sound.
Let the refs completely blow every conceivable call.
Tie one of Brady’s arms behind his back and put a tack in his shoe.

Doesn’t matter. This team finds a way to win.

I can’t believe I almost had an argument w/my mom about Manning v Brady. She claims Peyton is the best QB out there. uh…. NOT REALLY, Mom. But I kinda let it go, she being my mom and all. You believe that?

And the CD skipping sound is quite suspect, indeed.

I had been looking forward to that game for weeks and to be honest, I was disappointed (and angry) for much of the game. Effing refs with their (yes, i agree) agenda and the crowd against us in that frickin’ dome. And now… now what? I felt lost afterwards b/c of the bye week. But we’re going 16-0, dangit, and it’ll be awesome!!
