We’ve Done it All

I’m sitting this one out.

So I’m new here, at least to the admin page of THF. I’ve known Barry for about 7 years now, started out as dysfunctional roommates actually, but over many ups and downs we remain friends, despite his better judgment.

Anyway, about a year ago Barry approached me with an opportunity to create history…or at least participate in a scheme only he could imagine. His plan involved him filming a series of first dates and I, Ms_connections, would be awarded the staring role. Barry has always known when to proposition me with compromising ideas that usually end up with me taking shot gun in a very hilarious yet humiliating ride to nowhere. Maybe I’m imagining this but he always chooses the times when I just happen to be imbibing or even slightly intoxicated. Hogan’s Run, anyone!?

Anyway, his course of action involved me luring unsuspecting gentlemen callers onto first dates while Barry, stealthly, would record all of our awkward conversation and self conscious body language. I know what you’re thinking here; “Wow, so how fast did you jump at that opportunity?!”. The answer simply put is; I didn’t. Yep, I mustered up some dignity and politely declined.

So that was that. Barry’s dream; squashed. Or so I thought. Weeks later he approaches me yet again over IM. He says he found this cool beta web site called CrazyBlindDate.com. He wants to try it out but is scared. As an upper classmen of online dating, I completely understand his reluctance and suggest that we go tandem here and maybe try a little double dating action. Since we are friends it will make it easier to judge if the other one is genuinely having a good time or wanting to pluck their eyes out with any blunt object within reach like, say, a spoon. So the plan is that we will go on these first dates around Boston, together and separately, and I will write about my experiences and minor to major mishaps.

This could be cool so I register and wait. And wait…and wait and….wait. No one’s taking the bate here, in fact there are probably a whopping 4 members signed up for the service in the metro area. What a disappointment! Anyway, my subscription finally lapsed and the opportunity to write for THF was over.

Actually, the opportunity was over for about 2 days then I got an email from OKcupid.com who just happens to be related to CBD.com, somehow…apparently they sold my information to cupid who in turn offered me the opportunity to continue with my online dating career. I, of course, accepted and completed my online registration and subsequent profile page and off I went…into another abyss of unknown. Now, I’m no newbie to the perils of online dating…this ain’t my first rodeo if you know what I mean. To be honest, within the past year I’ve been on at least 2 first dates a month…bringing me up to double digits. Whatever number you may be thinking at this moment, double it. That’s a rough estimate of my first date count. Desirable, no? I’m somewhat of an “expert” it seems.

So here I am now…a veteran of first date hells that only the truly unlucky can understand. Believe me when I tell you it’s hard to meet people out there. When you invest so much time getting to know someone intellectually only to meet in person to find no physical attraction, it can get discouraging. For so long now I kept the faith and optimism in the whole internet dating world but I’ve finally realized that some things you just can’t force. For me, finding someone compatible is one of them. It’s easy to trick yourself into believing that delving into a mass amount of profiles and pictures will eventually lead to finding the right someone but the reality of that is pretty slim, although it has worked for a great number of people.

I am looking forward to reading about Cutty’s experiences, since he’s obviously a guy and may have a better go at it all. Good luck, Cutty! Keep us informed!
