Mystery Science Trivia Megapost

April 2nd, 2008 by Barry Freed · 1 Comment

Last night, the tellhimfred.com trivia allstars hit the Pizzeria Uno Revere trivia night for the first time in several weeks. Our winning streak had been unprecedented, with a perfectly balanced team. We took a few weeks off, and returned last night with only four players- none of which were female. We could only hope there were no questions about flowers and emotion.

Luckily there were none.

Since getting all four of us together is increasingly rare, I decided to bring my audio recorder to capture our conversation for blog fodder. And fodder we had. So, I’ll link to the audio at the end of this post, but now I’ll get into the debates spawned by our night out:

Discussion #1: Greatest Sports Nicknames

Cutty:

  • The Big Hurt

Barry:

  • The Big Unit
  • Mookie Wilson
  • Bill “Spaceman” Lee

Opposite:

  • Rollie Fingers
  • Iron Horse Lou Gherig
  • The Babe
  • Doc Gooden

Hoffa:

  • Crazy Legs
  • Bob Stanley “The Steamer”
  • Dennis Oil Can Boyd
  • Bump Bailey

Questions and Follies:

Mookie Wilson- Named William Hayward Wilson

Rollie Fingers- Was named Roland Glen Fingers, so “Rollie” was a nickname.

Discussion #2- Random Junk

Question: Did Tom Selleck ever win an Oscar?

Answer: No, but he won lots of stuff.

Question: Did William H. Macy ever write a poem?

Answer: Um, don’t know.

Discussion #3- More Random Junk

We come to the correct answer to an Outkast question (What 2003 vid features a performance by the fictional band “The Love Below”?), though I am completely wrong about which song was on which album. Then the conversation devolves and there’s LOTS of swearing and, ah, let’s forget about it.

By the way, garlique is not an element. I stand corrected.

Jimmy Hoffa is a self-confessed periodic table aficionado. He is absolutely thrilled to discuss his favorite elements.

Discussion #4- The Thrilling Conclusion

And here it is. We’re down 110-105 against our sworn enemies, the team known as “Tripping Balls”, and we’ve got two questions left. We can bet between 2 and 10 points, and we decide to bet it all. We roll the dice.

Question 1- In Cars- What car, introduced in 2001, has the best 2008 EPA fuel efficiency rating of any car?

Question 2- In US History- A massive write-in campaign from friends of a TV show convinced the Nixon administration to give what name to a test prototype of the space shuttle rolled out in 1976?

Discussion #5- WTF? Talking About Fashion?

I blinked and the conversation had turned into wearing shorts with ah, I have no idea.
