The 9-11 Twenty From Liberia

July 7th, 2008 by Barry Freed · 84 Comments

This weekend was just about the most boring weekend I can remember. Truly awful. I had absolutely nothing to do whatsoever, and I was sidelined with a ridiculous foot injury. So, I spent a lot of time watching shitty TV. And when you watch shitty TV, you watch even shittier commercials.

There was one commercial that I couldn’t escape. I could not hide from it. I tried changing the channels, but it was no use: it was following me around, mocking me. What was it? It was the 9-11 Twenty Dollar Commemorative Siver Leaf thing. Here’s what it looks like:

Now, there are several things about this that I’d like to discuss, but first, I must ask you a favor: please watch the commercial. When you’re done, finish reading. I thank you.

Finish watching? Good. Thanks bud.

1. Government authorized non-circulating Liberian legal tender. So wait, this is actually legal in Liberia? Liberia. Yes, that Liberia.

2. This Coin-Certificate displays a standard $20 denomination on one side. But on the other side, it’s the first time ever that two separate denominations have been used to add up to the full $20 face value – it uses 9 and 11 to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy.

So you’re telling me that the numbers 9 and 11 actually add up to twenty….and you’re using those two numbers to add up to 20 on the bill itself? Srsly? Dood, sign me up.

3. It’s giant size dwarfs any US tender. A big silver liberian coin is larger than our money? I want that.

4. “A silvery tribute to all that were lost on that fateful day”. I can’t even go on any more about this.

Thoughts?

Don’t forget that you’re limited to 5 per order. How many people would be ordering mass quantities? Well, I can tell you one chick with two thumbs who would be…this one right here.

  • 2 Sarah // Jul 7, 2008 at 4:39 pm

“The frosted twin towers stand out against a mirror like background, much as they did in the gleaming sunshine of that fateful morning.”

Wow. And you can only use it in Liberia? I’m so confused. But hey, satisfaction guaranteed!

IF you are not immediately offended by this product, just return for a full refund!

  • 3 Sarah // Jul 7, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Also, if you haven’t gone to the doctor yet, I’m going to come down there and take a hammer to your other foot, because it would serve you right.

  • 4 Jimmy Hoffa // Jul 9, 2008 at 8:42 am

I wonder what the value of the silver would be if you melted it down? This could be a real boondoggle.

  • 5 Sarah // Jul 10, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Yeah, but if you melted it down it means you hate America and the terrorists win!

  • 6 Anon // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:02 pm

    $20 LIB=$0.31USD
That’s right… 31 cents of “silver leaf” (read: foil). They say the “certificate” is now available at it’s face value. I wonder if they now legally have to sell it at 31 cents or, if they charge $20US, they have to guarantee it’s worth that much (which they can’t do). I don’t see how this isn’t a crime.

  • 7 person // Jul 12, 2008 at 3:06 pm

um, guys… i don’t think it 20 liberian dollars…it is actually 20 USD. The note was probabaly made in liberia but it is still US money. And, no, it is not 31 cents!

  • 8 Alex // Jul 13, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Oh, it most definitely is NOT US currency. Notice how it’s stamped ‘Republic of Liberia’ on the left of the reverse side? And on the front… why yes, instead of the Great Seal that’s on US Legal Tender, that would indeed be the Liberian coat of arms. And as for it being made in Liberia… if it were, it would not be legal US tender. The Constitution specifically states that (Article I, section 8, clause 5) Congress has the exclusive power to coin money of the United States and to regulate its value. Because of that, the United States Mint is the only place with the lawful authority to mint and issue legal tender United States coins. (note how this 9/11 twenty is ‘privately minted’) It is not, in any way, ‘US money.’
Now… is it possible that if you flew yourself off to Liberia you could trade it in for the Liberian dollar in an amount that equals USD 20? Hey, maybe. Who knows what kind of legal loophole tango these people did… and I’m sure that Liberia would be willing to go along with it and ‘authorize’ the minting of these little gems if they could make a profit.

  • 9 stargazer // Jul 14, 2008 at 5:22 pm

I imagine they arranged for this to be “legal Liberian tender” to get around some of the legal problems from the last commemorative endeavor. These are the same people that sold September 11th commemorative coins that were “minted from silver, recovered from ground zero” and got in a bit of legal trouble for making such claims. Checkout ripoffreport.com and look these guys up; lots of complaints of being ripped off.

  • 10 sly // Jul 16, 2008 at 12:03 am

Man, the things people can get duped into. I’m sure part of the proceeds are “donated” to government officials of Liberia’s own mint in exchange for their cooperation in this scam.

  • 11 Funny // Jul 17, 2008 at 10:40 pm

This is the funniest commercial ever!!! I can trade this in Liberia for 1,276.95 LRD (Liberian Dollars). I’m rich bitch!!!!

  • 12 GODBLESSAMERICA // Jul 18, 2008 at 6:16 pm

If u really look and listin to this commercial it’s not a curence to be used here in the United States or in Liberia…the commercial says it’s a Special September 11th commemorative
Government authorized non-circulating Liberian legal silver certificate and thats all…and yes i bought 2…for my kids…when the 9/11 tragedy happened my daughter was 1 month old and i was siting on my bed feeding her when i saw it on the news, it’s not the value of the item but the momery of what it means to one…just like i bought the whole collection of U.S. Quarters to put in the cardboard map..me and my kids do it together..it’s something to give to your kids as a memory when they grow up…

And i’m sure that each and everyone of us have spent more money on other things far more worthless then the Special September 11th commemorative
Government authorized non-circulating Liberian legal silver certificate, come on folks….

  • 13 Steve // Jul 19, 2008 at 3:23 am

on point one, “yes, that liberia”?

    what do you mean??

i don’t follow because i’m not sure liberia ever did anything note worthy… certainly not so bad that they would be “yes, that liberia”

    did i miss something?

also, if this is liberian currency, so be it, if you are stupid enough to buy liberian currency thinking it is US, you deserve what you get… might as well get a bowflex with it, or a years supply of extenze!!

  • 14 themailman05 // Jul 19, 2008 at 9:20 am

LAWLS. this commercial appears at every commercial break on comedy central. The point he is making about “yes, that Liberia” is to point out the outlandishness of this ad’s claims. This is such a scam. LOL “now available at face value” in Liberia LOL. This is why I hate commemerative stuff on tv. It’s always a scam. BTW, this is only covered in Silver Leaf. This has about the same value as tin foil. Don’t buy this unless you plan to travel to Liberia.

  • 15 BigDaddyV // Jul 19, 2008 at 10:34 am

don’t waste your hard earned money on something that has no(USD) value. if you want to buy something you see on tv buy some mighty putty this shit is really worth the money.

  • 16 patrick // Jul 19, 2008 at 12:21 pm

“i’m not sure liberia ever did anything note worthy… certainly not so bad that they would be “yes, that liberia” ”

“That Liberia” is the place that hosted terrorist training camps, was invaded by the US Marines 3 times in the last 20 years, and was home to one (admitidly one of many) of the worst genocidal atrocities of our generation.

Yeah lets let them “commemorate” 9-11.

  • 17 Gary // Jul 19, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Oh, come on now….. I am using mine to buy those other products that you can’t do without. (Colon Cleaner, weight loss while sleeping, weight loss while eating anything you want, super duper energy in a 2oz bottle, magic grill cleaner). All for $19.99 so I still have a penny left which is more than it is actually worth.

  • 18 Anonymous // Jul 19, 2008 at 11:17 pm

I was curious about this and looked up the exchange rate. 20 liberian $ = .30 USA

  • 19 Melle // Jul 21, 2008 at 12:00 am

Wow, you guys really do not know a thing about Liberia. If you took this to Liberia or any other country they would laugh in your face. The silver is ONLY Liberian Silver and nothing more than that. They do not use this $20 thing in Liberia and they have no intention to. And to Patrick, don’t ever think the people of Liberia were harboring some genocidal leader by choice. My parents escaped the civil war and Charles Taylor, and they were lucky as hell. Charles Taylor was asked on several occasions by different world leaders to step down and he refused. The people were too afraid to get rid of him. Finally, he stepped down thanks to President Bush.

  • 20 ryan // Jul 21, 2008 at 4:01 pm

oohh no , I bought one, thinking it was pure solid silver. I’m that person who yall are trying to warn.
    :(

  • 21 george // Jul 22, 2008 at 4:34 pm

This is simply a company owned by some greedy foreigners who prey upon simple minded greedy Americans who actually think this kind of s-h-i-t might be worth something one day. If you want to do something about it, e-mail the networks that air these commercials and tell them how disgusting you think it is. Also, send e-mails to the other commercials parent companies that air on those same networks. Let them know you will NOT buy any of their products because they advertise on networks who air these distasteful ads. Start an e-mail campaign to flood these parent companies in-boxes and then you will see these stupid ads dissappear.
    America jack……..free speech!

  • 22 DeAy // Jul 24, 2008 at 1:31 am

I am an American. Not a Liberian. I simply can not comprehend what Liberia has to do with the 9-11 tragedy nor do I care to figure it out. All I know is that this commercial completely enraged me! This was the only place I could find to vent! Thank you.

  • 23 Sceptikal // Jul 24, 2008 at 11:13 am

Yeah, this commercial was so obviously a scam that I instantly googled it to find out who was blogging about this crap. Unfortunately, this country is filled with mental midgets (no offense, Ryan) who just jump on the bandwagon, wiping the saliva from their perpetually open mouths. Oh, and Godbless? You are a supreme idiot! Why not buy your children a Kim Jong Il doll to commemorate North Koreas contribution to the planet, or maybe an Auschwitz coin to commemorate the atrocities committed by Hitler and his heathens? Wake up, moron. Nobody needs to pay some charlatans to remember a time of inconsolable pain and heartache in our nations history. Save a newspaper or buy your children a book. I am constantly sickened by the gullibility and ignorance of the majority of the population of this country. Thank you so much to all of the intelligent people who contributed to exposing the morbid banality of this scm, and I DO intend to send some e-mails to those who would aid these con-artists in perpetuating these scams.

  • 24 John K // Jul 24, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Okay, this is Liberian legal tender not US legal tender which means it is 20 dollars liberian no US. If you do a currency check on this 20 dollars liberian is somewhere between 31-33 cents depending. Now for the amount that is being charged on TV they are getting 60 times the value of this legal tender for our money. But we are a culture that bought pet rocks and follow the hollywood celeberty dramas on Etv while ignoring our own internal and external policies.

  • 25 mike // Jul 25, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Of course, then there’s the typical IDIOT who doesn’t have the mental capacity to form an intelligent argument and defaults to racism and profinity. Way to go “mike”! Anyway, back to the real reason I was going to write - this commercial is COMPLETELY misleading. U.S. face value, or Liberian face value?!? Two VERY different things…

Sceptikal…LOLZ…u make me laugh…n u say no offence to Ryan…(no offense Ryan)…at least i knew wat i was geting..n u call me a moron..(no offense again Ryan)…Ryan thought it was pure solid silver…Quote from Sceptikal..(”Thank you so much to all of the intelligent people who contributed to exposing the morbid banality of this scm”).. every red blooded american contributes to a forien country one way o another….o havent you looked at the tag on major brand pair of gym pants lately…either MADE IN CHINA o THE PHILLIPPIENS…

    LMAO @ all the comments.

When I saw this commercial I thought I heard the word Liberia but I wasn’t sure. So I YouTubed it and sure enough he was saying Liberia. LOL. My family is Liberian and I am just in awe that this is something on tv. Its amazing the amount of scamming that comes from underdeveloped nations– West African nations meanly. HiLARious

…But seriously though, they shouldn’t let people put this kind of stuff on tv.

  • 30 micmacin // Jul 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

I bought one of these. I cashed it in while in Maine. They googled exchange rates, got it backwards and gave me $68.66 US. Go figure!

  • 31 GODBLESSAMERICA // Jul 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Pixpusha…dude its not just the West African nations, its here in our own back yard…how many fools bought the stupid Bow flex cause they saw some buff out man or some hot chick showing how to use it and the commintator saying that you can look like them….how bout all those informertials on T.V. that come on late at night…

o the best of all..how many of you people have been left on hold becasue your puter wont work and you dont know how to fix it and you cant understand the person on the line helping you cause they are from a third world country…yes it hapend to me once and that was the last time cause i learnd how to fix my own puters…thank you.

all you people are over looking your own back yard in trying to over anylize stupid rip offs coming from third world countries…the whole world is based on scames…n the United States is the biggest scame artist..those other countries are just following in the footsteps because they see that it works, becuase people of the United States are the worst for falling for crap sold or scames seen on T.V….just to save a buck….but when they get that cheap ass thing they bought to save that 1$, yup u guessed it, you get what you paid for…

    Peace out….

  • 32 KScott // Jul 27, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I have been reading information on the Liberian Legal tender made to commemorate the Worse American loss on American soil!!!! The rally sad thing is that the American T.V. stations are selling these morons airtime!!!! There is no reason that we should give this any time on airwaves, I am pretty sure that any of the terrorist groups that are keeping an eye on us through FOX News or CNN are laughing at us when they see this commercial played. I am a faithful Fox News patron but when I saw this commercial on during the news cast I almost got sick!!! Any true red blooded American should be absolutely sick over this crap!!!! Was Liberia the only people that would let this non government company make a piece of crap to sell??? And if so, lets advertise this crap in Liberia and stop trying to hurt the American people with a reminder of this huge tragety that tore the hearts out of so many American families!!!! This just makes me totally sick!!! This has nothing to do with the worthless piece of “leaf silver”…….this has to do with the never ending jerks that are trying to make money off of the loss of American lives!!!! I am offended over this and I think that the company that made this crap shold have to recall that junk and be held accountable for refunding ever person that was tricked into buying one……maybe even be charged with a criminal charge!!!!
    Okay, I m done now……thanks.

  • 33 KScott // Jul 27, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Oh and I did not buy!!!! I would not spend a wooden nickle on this crap!!! I would not be surprised if we find out later the the prceeds from this junk are buying bombs for fighting our American soldiers in Afganistan and Iraq!!!! One more thing……whyare we in so much turmoil over oil if we are in IRAQ???!!!! If we are there to keep them safe maybe we should be compensated with very low priced, or free oil until the Iraqis can baby sit themselves.

  • 34 Barry Freed // Jul 27, 2008 at 6:23 pm

An infomercial leads to international oil conspiracies and changes in foreign policy. God bless the internet.

  • 35 Brian Pinette // Jul 27, 2008 at 10:32 pm

I am a New Yorker. I was there and ran down the street in terror like so many others. This ad for/from Liberia is rude, vulgar and insulting. Anything to make a dollar. Anything for another Country to make an American dollar. Go figure. Profoundly sad and at the same time, ludicrous beyond mortal words.

  • 36 Randall // Jul 28, 2008 at 12:06 am

One thing we’ve all missed here is the term Silver Leaf. It is struck in silver leaf, not silver. It is not worth $20 in silver, and can only be exchanged in Liberia (in private exchange only) then the L$20 would have to be converted into USD. It does not mention what medium the silver leaf is covering, but I’m sure it’s not $20 woth of anything.

  • 37 Randall // Jul 28, 2008 at 12:21 am

The silver weight is in fact .45 mg. Basically worthless. National Collectors Mint has been taken to court on several occasions, holds an unfavorable standing with the BBB, and has actually been stopped from striking other coins by the Government, when they were found guilty of misrepresentation, misleading advertisment, hell the list goes on. Out to make money off the emotions of those misguided enough to fall for it.

  • 38 national collectors // Jul 28, 2008 at 10:07 pm

this is a quality product at a quality price and my associates stand by it despite any and all rumours. Look into the poster from maine and you’ll find that his experience is quite common. 9/11 was a tragedy and only by funneling large amounts of american investments into non-regulated west african nations can we ever hope to properly grieve.

  • 39 micmacin // Jul 28, 2008 at 10:21 pm

The “National collectors” poster must be as bright as a bag of hammers.

Does he or she not appreciate a bit of humour?

I said the place in Maine got it “backwardS” and gave me $68.66.

iT WAS A JOKE! Stupid, Stupid.

My Friends in Maine would never fall for that. Obviously the poster did.

This is the greatest thread ever. Starts iff with people pointing out the obvious scam of these sorts of collectibles… and turns into a “how do these rednecks have the internet” patriotic rant!

    Dumbasses.

Scepikal… you hit it right on the head. Bravo, my friend.

GODBLESSMYCAPSLOCK… I always wondered who bought crap like this and the quarter maps. Thanks for enlightening me. Do me a favor.. next time a dickshunairie salesman comes to your trailer park… buy one. Your spelling sucks.

To the idiots like KScott.. who believe that the war in Iraq has something to do with 911.. or that being patriotic means sending our children into war looking for nuclear weapons that don’t exist and than calling it a liberation… just shut up. Read a book and stop letting the news do your thinking.

Titanic… biggest movie of all time. Pearl Harbor did pretty well too. People will continue to capitalize of American tragedy as long as Nascar watching, Hot Pocket eating, immigrant-phobic, Toby Keith wannabe trailer park inhabitants buy into this shit.. and call it pride.

Wow all I have to say.

  • 47 Wow02 // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Well, I’m not surprised. Capitalism exists at every corner of the globe. This is in a way no different from a history channel special on the Holocast which draws you in so you can be hit with advertisement during the commercial breaks. The network sells advertising airtime and they mask it behind an informative program about the darkest period in Jewish history.

Is it right? Of course not but, we should be use to this form of capitalism by now.

As for the “Government authorized non-circulating Liberian legal tender”, personally I wouldn’t buy it cause I’m just not into that stuff but, it’s all in how you look at it. Positive or negative. If it makes you remember 911 then it’s a god thing cause that day should never be forgotten. If it remains you of dirty capitalism, then get use to it.

As for this bill coming from Liberia, it’s strange but there is a connection. The US is a country born of Great Britain due to civil dissatisfaction over its ruling body and Liberia is a nation born of the US due to civil dissatisfaction over its ruling body. Many things about the nation of Liberia is directly influenced by the US; example, the flag which is almost an exact copy. Technically it makes more sense than say… Spain making a 911 bill.

In my opinion though, they just shouldn’t have done it. Making the bill that is.

Oh yeah, I was born in Liberia and lived in the US since four years of age and I’m not proud of it but, I get it.

  • 48 Wow02 // Jul 31, 2008 at 6:32 pm

    it’s a god thing

    it’s a good thing

  • 49 M. Ragan // Aug 2, 2008 at 11:33 am

I have to admit, the way the commercial is designed, it makes it sound like it’s an official minting of some kind. That is, of course, until you read the fine print. And with the way the narrator tugs at your heartstrings (’that fateful day”), you might miss that it comes from Liberia. You know the U.S. government would never stoop that low with this kind of air time.

Since this item is “non-circulating” (e.g., worthless and probably not worth face value) from an area of the world known for conning people out of their money with e-mail scams, I’m sure people have already lined up buying this pig-in-a-poke.

There is no indication that proceeds are going anywhere but to those who made this.

  • 50 Joe // Aug 2, 2008 at 5:09 pm

How much does The 9-11 Twenty From Liberia weigh???

  • 51 Jack Waldron // Aug 2, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Every poster here has missed one thing.

The face value of a collector coin is irrelevant. What matters is what someone else is willing to pay for it. I know people who have bought all kinds of collectible plates for $20, in the hope it would become worth much more. Some have and many others have gone down in price.
Obviously the silver leaf isn’t worth much, and it probably is worth considerably more than $0.31 Liberian Dollars. I know of no metal that you could make that large and be worth only 1/3 of a US Dollar. But, maybe there is some metal mined in Liberia that is.
I would never buy one of these.
This is similar to the Philadelphia Mint which minted such things as the Standing Liberty Gold dollar and sold for $20 US. Except you actually got a gold coin worth something more than a dollar but less than $20. Still this Liberian coin is probably making a tremendous profit. I wish I’d thought of it. I could use buckets and buckets of money.

Definitely not worth $20 US, but then I used to have a Mickey Mantle rookie card that cost about $0.01 when my grandfather bought it and was worth $20,000 US when I gave it away to a friend (though I didn’t know it then - but I bet he did). :(

Then there are all those Pez containers I threw away from childhood and comic books and matchbook cars and …

So who knows what this will be worth someday, but I know my luck with collectibles (except my stamp collection and match collection).

  • 52 JB // Aug 4, 2008 at 9:36 pm

I was going to buy one but I didn’t have any money left over after naming my own star, cleansing my colon, and detoxing from those foot pads.

  • 53 Randy // Aug 4, 2008 at 11:18 pm

Any one who buys one of these is getting SCREWED !!!!!!!!!!!

The advertisement specifically states that these items are made from Silver LEAF. Silver leaf is made commercially with a thickness of 0.2-0.5 MICRONS. Most bacteria are longer that Silver leaf is thick.

2 pieces of Silver leaf glued to something to make it look like you are actually getting something.

Size of Silver nugget that you would get if you harvested the metal:
    3.125 (3 1/8) in. x 7.375 (7 3/8) in. x .000019 in. (5 microns) = 0.000437 cubic in. x2 (sides) = 0.000874 cubic inches of Silver.

I really don’t think that you would get a whole hell of a lot of money for that. Maybe less than a penny, if lucky a penny or 2.

If any collector of any kind offers you anything, jump on it. Let them take the loss.

  • 54 Randy // Aug 4, 2008 at 11:23 pm

    Jack W.

The Philadelphia Mint is an official U.S. mint. They did not make the coins you are thinking of. It was probably the Franklin Mint - which is in Exton, Pa.

  • 55 bond192 // Aug 5, 2008 at 9:28 am

You ignorant fools! Stop talking about things you know nothing about. Did you know that mint is being circulated by a US company that had done business with the Liberian government in the past but did not get permission to run this scam? Moreover, you need to stop talking down to other civilized people like they were nothing. One thing I agree with is that the mint is a mess. However, the guy who started this stupid blog needs to go back and research how minting works. And you all should too.

  • 56 bond192 // Aug 5, 2008 at 9:35 am

…and oh, this is not a legal tender in any country, least Liberia.

Hey , steve, Anon, national whatever, whoever… this shit won’t sell for a dollar in Liberia. It was not made in Liberia. Anyone can pay to mint commemorative coins. Companies also buy rights to make commemorative coins. This time, these guys went ahead a did this without permission. They could, and just might get sued for this. I bet not one of you know a thing about Liberia, how it was founded, where it’s located or it’s many contributions or alliance to the US, especially it’s role during the cold war. I just want to help cure your ignorance.

  • 58 MM // Aug 5, 2008 at 2:20 pm

I like JB - The colon cleansing and Detoxing scam - Put it on TV and someone will pay big $ for it. This is the tackiest scam of all. When are the leaders of Our Country “The USA” going to look out for its own - instead of other countries? This should have never been allowed on TV

  • 59 bond192 // Aug 5, 2008 at 4:10 pm

I dispise that guy (Wen) for his comment above. What do you think people from Liberia are? I see that somebody went and did their homework today. Like WOW said, this is capitalism. You can sell whatever you want. And if it makes sense to you, buy it then. Just don’t insult a whole country for no good reason. I will say it again, from all that I know, Liberia did not authorize this mess and does not get paid for it. This is the kind of ignorant and arrogant perception that blindly leads one to disaster.

  • 60 BLACK KING // Aug 5, 2008 at 9:46 pm

the only thing i care about in this situation is the innocent people who died on tht fateful day - by the dirty white devils called THE USA GOVERNMENT! that’s right: murdering of yje very citizens that it supposedly “represents” all for the sake of ceating a FALSE FLAG war with cvert agenda for OIL war. killing innocent iraqi citizens! and the people of liberia (and the rest of africa) were obviously exploited ages ago. again - by the dirty white man. so, i hope liberia DOES scam you suckas. and to the cracka(s) who used racial slurs in earlier post: KISS MY BLACK ASS AND DIE!

  • 61 Jimmy Hoffa // Aug 8, 2008 at 1:30 pm

An invitation to KISS MY BLACK ASS. That’s what we like to see at TellHimFred.com!

Barry, this is the greatest comment thread ever. I crown you King Of The Interwebs. ALL HAIL!

  • 62 . // Aug 10, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Ok, so this is what I am seeing. It says its liberian silver. Quite frankly I think its a scam, but it doesn’t mean you cant buy it. So what if you buy it regardless to you and whoever recieved it, it is a symbol of that terrible day and our efforts to stop it from happening. I’d rather not buy it. I just think that maybe you may be offending someone, and being no better than the infomercial.

  • 63 GODBLESSAMERICA // Aug 12, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    LOL…LMAO…ROFL…

all of you are hypocritical buffoons…at least i admit it…

    bottom line…end of stroy….

  • 64 dave // Aug 12, 2008 at 10:37 pm

anyone who buys this hates america. the people who died on 9-11 will haunt your family for years to come. this is cheapening a tradgedy. sick

  • 65 Asmo // Aug 16, 2008 at 5:23 pm

End of the “stroy” is it, GBA? No, the end of the “stroy” is that you make it very clear just who is foolish enough to buy this kind ot tacky crap. I’m sure you also have little bottles of “healing waters” from Lordes in your medicine chest and at least half a dozen of those “Watch Jesus open his eyes” paper prayer mats strung around your house, don’t you?

    Idiocy is priceless….

  • 66 gobblegobble // Aug 21, 2008 at 11:24 am

just saw the commercial and imediately googled it and was happy to find that I wasn’t crazy.

just think about how many they probably sold.
    i’m sure in the millions… pcs…

I know gold minting is not allowed here but available for minting outside the country.
maybe it’s same for silver? except this barely has any in it… complete scam ofcourse…

why are we hitting the extremes of so many things?food, death, pop.,oil
extremes in advertising. i know that this kind of ad wouldn’t of been on in the 80’s… what could be next in advertising? just borderlining legal/illegal. i wonder if the amount of silver used went down periodically…

  • 67 Jessie // Aug 22, 2008 at 8:50 pm

I saw the commercial and did the same thing as others who have commented. I immediately googled to confirm that this was a scam. And then I got sucked in.

Mike, stay in school and just say no. Ebony Emperor, You are right, we crackas’ have held secret meetings since grade school (remember the day you were sent out to recess by yourself?) That was when we were let in on the big conspiracy and taught how to make your life miserable. I don’t know how you found out, but damn, you’re good. Ok, everyone, the gig’s up.

Finally - It’s just a commercial. Albeit, causing well intentioned, flag blinded people to hand over hard earned bucks. And it’s turned into a platform for world domination and/or abomination.

Let’s put it into perspective. The product is a marketing tool, using emotions to create a perceived need to own thereby making money for the brains behind the scam.

If you really want to get me started, let’s look at where Hollister clothing is made. How much do you think the little Vietnamese girl gets paid to sew those expensive t-shirts?

  • 68 michelle // Aug 29, 2008 at 6:46 pm

I feel like such a sucker. I ordered four and got the fifth one “free”. My husband’s birthday is on 9/11 and he has collected coins since he was a child. I thought this would be a great addition to his collection. I rarely watch television but saw this ad while in a hotel one night and thought to myself it would make a nice birthday gift.

I feel like an idiot. :-/

  • 69 Loren // Aug 31, 2008 at 2:38 am

Doesn’t the country of Liberia fund terrorism! Way to go Americans buying this stupid product.

  • 70 kswheels // Sep 1, 2008 at 2:39 am

Liberia has NOTHING to do with this. The company that sells it it is based in Port Chester, New York. They just use Liberia to make it sound slightly more official than it is.

  • 71 freddie // Sep 1, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Half a penny worth of silver. Liberia. Hauling bottled water (it’s all tap water) to and fro. Cell phone in your face driving a hybrid SUV. Fuck us all for even commenting on this horseshit. Monkeys. All of us. (except radical muslims, which are sub-monkey)

  • 72 Gary // Sep 5, 2008 at 7:26 pm

hahahah.. Whoever buys this is retarded…

  • 73 Mike // Sep 30, 2008 at 12:58 am

    This commercial makes me sick.

It’s nothing but some African’s (and hopefully not an actual American’s) cheap attempt to make a quick buck, but *exploiting* the deep emotions we all still share from this horrible, tragic day.

I encourage all of you to help expose this complete SHAM of a company.

    Shame on these opportunists.
They have no morals and will pay for trying to capitalize on the lost souls of that tragic day.

  • 74 Scott H // Oct 7, 2008 at 10:27 am

Are we missing the point? Essentially they picked Liberia because it was one of the countries that actually call their currency “Dollar”. Coincidentally, it is the one where the “dollar” is worth the least in world markets. So, they sell this “coin” for 20 dollars and put “20 Dollars” right there on the front. People just assume that the 20 dollars is American and that somehow they are at least not losing money. Unfortunately it is 20 Liberian dollars which is worth 31 cents USD at today’s rate.

Sadly, this is an American company that simply used Liberia so they could market a 31 cent piece of trash as being worth 20 dollars. As I learned on the show Street Cents as a child in Canada, this company is “fit for the pit”.

  • 75 kelly // Oct 9, 2008 at 10:51 am

you guys are dummies, this is just a collectors piece and nothing more. why are you talking about the value of it? were you gonna get a big mac with it? dont be idiots. who cares who made it. it is beautiful.i think a collector of 911 items would pay a fortune for this years down the road if he didnt already have it. we spend money on lots of useless junk all the time. i like it. stop nit picking!

  • 76 WWrestlingEntertain // Oct 10, 2008 at 8:17 pm

can i use a $25 Visa Gift Card on this purchase? i don’t have a credit card!!!!!!

  • 77 LJ // Nov 15, 2008 at 10:04 pm

This is designed to appeal to those folks who fell for the “Beanie Babies will put your kids through college and make you a millionaire in 20 years” crap. And who buy boxes of commemorative cereal and don’t ever open them because they might be worth more if the stale flakes are still inside. Rule of thumb: what will be worth something in 50 years is stuff like the poster above mentioned: Pez containers, Cracker Jack prizes, stuff everyone throws away unless it winds up in the bottom of a junk drawer somewhere. If it says “collectible” on it here in the US, you can be sure waaaay too many of them have been snatched up and lovingly preserved in mint condition by gullible people looking to make something for nothing for them ever to make anything from it. It’s like lottery tickets.

  • 78 thom b // Nov 21, 2008 at 12:34 am

Foreign countries have been minting “US government approved” collector coins and plates and plaques, etc for years. Don’t you remember a few years ago there was a “US government approved” or “US mint approved” Disnayland commemorative gold coin. What is all the fuss about? So Liberia wasn’t a part of the attack on 9-11, either on the receiving end or in the attack itself, who cares? All this is just because if companies could have it their way, our government would agree to make commemorative or collectible coins or stamps, and these companies would make all the profit, but the US government won’t do it, so they farm it out to any other government who will. There are companies out there that sell sheets of 4, 8, 16, or 32 uncut official US $1, $2, $5, and/or others and IMPLY that they are the exclusive sellers of these RARE uncut dollar bills. When in truth, you can buy them directly from the US mint. The government does charge a premium for shipping and insurance, not to mention the manpower to separate a certain number of sheets before they get to the cutter, and package them so they won’t get damaged, etc. This 9-11 silver certificate doesn’t appeal to me, but my nephew mentioned he thought it looked cool, so I will be getting him one for Christmas, along with a few of the uncirculated gold US president $1 coins (also minted and sold by the US mint).

You know, I have nothing against someone trying to make a buck. But there is a line that should be drawn, don’t put the lives of 343 firefighters and thousands of my fellow americans on sale for 20 bucks. Have some respect for the dead. At least give some of the profits to the families, or to a charity. Its like my only visit to ground zero, there were 2 people selling goods and fighting right on the gravesite(not everyone was recovered yet). No respect, as there is no respect now!!

  • 80 Ronnie // Jan 26, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Are you kidding me? They claim they’re selling it at face value. Really? In Liberian money or American? Cause last I looked, twenty Liberian dollars was equal to about thirty-two American cents! If they think I’m paying twenty American dollars for something that’s worth 32 cents, they got another think coming!

Who does not like to affiliate with good things and a good name? Only fools like you who think that Liberia had to do with this con show. Any way Liberia for over 100 years parred their currenct 1:1 with the American dollar. That is why,,,,,,,,

  • 83 strongtower // Mar 16, 2009 at 5:39 pm

wow and I was mad at my wife during Christmas because she got me the wrong 9/11 thing. It was a commemorative coin form our military not the 9/11twenty thing. I was hoping of getting one in July 09 for my birthday but after reading this board it can go to Liberian hell.

  • 84 Lisa // Apr 25, 2009 at 4:30 am

Liberian tender? WTF?! So…this is to commemorate 9-11 and it’s also legal tender in Liberia. “The frosted twin towers stand out against a mirrored background- much like they did on that fateful morning” What the hell would they say that for? This is the tackiest and cheesiest thing being hawked on TV. It disturbs me so much, I am compelled to watch it whenever it comes on :(
