Yes, it’s true. Estelle Getty died today at 84. Despite popular belief, she was still alive until today.
Getty played the cantankerous Sophia on the popular (?) television program The Golden Girls. Though she was the youngest of the women on the show, she played the mother of Dorothy, played by Bea Arthur.
I could not think of a better tribute to Mrs. Getty and the rest of the Golden Girls cast than to present the world famous Golden Girls Drinking Game. This is a game I was not aware of until today whilst listening to the Toucher and Rich Show on WBCN radio here in Boston. As soon as I got home I found the rules online, and here they are:
The Golden Girls Drinking Game:
take one drink if:
Sophia says "picture it….sicily"
Rose tells a story about St. Olef
The Girls eat cheese cake
Someone says "shut up Rose"
There’s a reference to an ex-husband or dead husband
Only three sides of the kitchen table are occupied
Blanche says "big daddy"
Blanche makes a reference to sex
A reference is made to dorothy being a substitute school teacher
The "girls" earings are extremely big and tacky
Someone is in a robe
Reference to shady pines
Blanche lies about her age
Someone mentions the lanai
Blanch says the word "Man" or "Men"
Dorothy says "Ma"
Sophia makes fun of Dorothy
Anyone makes fun of Rose
Everytime Blanch goes on a date
take three drinks if:
Someone from empty nest shows up
Sophia gets laid
One of the children comes to visit
There’s a flashback
Dorothy has a date
Someone wears an evening gown
Someone mentions Dorothy’s cross dressing brother Phil
Someone is in the hospital
pound it if:
Someone gets married
Someone dresses like a nun
You see the upside down exclamation point on the back of their door
And finally, here’s a tribute to Estelle Getty:

We’d be drinking through the entire episode if we did. I love the Golden Girls. I celebrate their entire catalog…seriously.
