National Collector’s Mint, The 9-11 Twenty, and THF Is A Dead Zone In July

July 28th, 2008 by Barry Freed · 7 Comments

Okay, I’ll be the first to admit it: July is the worst month for blog posting. There are vacations, work trips, and the kind of weather that makes you want to go outside. Not exactly prime “sit at the computer and think of junk to say” time.

But who wants to read posts apologizing for not posting? I mean, come on. That’s lame. So let’s get in to some stuff.

National Collector’s Mint

First, I want to say that I couldn’t believe the traffic and amount of comments I received due to the 9/11 Twenty post. If you go to google and type in “9/11 twenty” you’ll see that good ole TellHimFred.com is the second result….after the official site for the 9/11 twenty. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I suggest you read the comments from that post. Absolutely incredible. People seriously have strong opinions on what I saw as just another stupid infomercial. A short sampling:

This is the funniest commercial ever!!! I can trade this in Liberia for 1,276.95 LRD (Liberian Dollars). I’m rich bitch!!!!

and

If u really look and listin to this commercial it’s not a curence to be used here in the United States or in Liberia…the commercial says it’s a Special September 11th commemorative
Government authorized non-circulating Liberian legal silver certificate and thats all…and yes i bought 2…for my kids…when the 9/11 tragedy happened my daughter was 1 month old and i was siting on my bed feeding her when i saw it on the news, it’s not the value of the item but the momery of what it means to one…just like i bought the whole collection of U.S. Quarters to put in the cardboard map..me and my kids do it together..it’s something to give to your kids as a memory when they grow up…

And i’m sure that each and everyone of us have spent more money on other things far more worthless then the Special September 11th commemorative
Government authorized non-circulating Liberian legal silver certificate, come on folks….

more:

This is simply a company owned by some greedy foreigners who prey upon simple minded greedy Americans who actually think this kind of s-h-i-t might be worth something one day. If you want to do something about it, e-mail the networks that air these commercials and tell them how disgusting you think it is. Also, send e-mails to the other commercials parent companies that air on those same networks. Let them know you will NOT buy any of their products because they advertise on networks who air these distasteful ads. Start an e-mail campaign to flood these parent companies in-boxes and then you will see these stupid ads dissappear.
America jack……..free speech!

Like any professional journalist, I decided to do some real research on the company behind the 9/11 twenty. The company: National Collector’s Mint. The company has some real gems. Here are a few:

Yes, folks. That’s right: It’s the 2008 100th anniversary Corvette dollar with, you got it, light-up tail lights.

Have you ever said “Hey, these coins are neat and shiny, but man they’d be better if they talked”? Well if you have, these guys have the answer. It’s the 2008 George Washington Talking Coin.

From the site:

Hear the actual words spoken by the Father of our Country, President George Washington, over 200 years ago. Just press the shield on the reverse and listen. This Liberian government-authorized, non-circulating legal tender coin is clad in 71 mg of .925 Pure Silver. Best of all, when you press the eagle’s shield on the reverse, you’ll hear the actual words of wisdom from the Father of our Country, George Washington. Each coin includes four inspiring quotes. Great for collectors of all ages!

Who Runs This Show?

Here’s the weirdest thing. The guy behind this company? Barry Goldwater Jr. From the site:

We’re proud of our association with Barry M. Goldwater, Jr.

During his 14 years of SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY in the U.S. Congress, he was in the forefront of activities on issues that remain important to our citizens today; issues like energy and privacy.  he authored the Solar Photo-Voltaic Energy Act and the Right to Privacy Act, among others.  He served on the Committee on Science and Technology, the Committee on Public Works and Transportation, and the Joint Committee on Energy.  He continues to promote conservation and ecological programs, energy efficiency, the right to privacy, and a return of the balance of power to the states and to the people, among other issues.
Barry M. Goldwater, Jr. is More Than Just a Patriot, More Than a Compassionate Conservative…
He is a Humanitarian!

Can this get any stranger?

Okay, that’s all for today. I promise the THF staff will get its collective shit together and start posting again soon. Baseball season is starting to heat up, football season is right around the corner, and with that comes posts.

The really funny thing, 1 mg equals about 0.000035 ounces so 71 mg of .925 silver is worth about $0.04 at todays market. Thanks NCM!!

Wow! You mean they recorded George Washington’s actual voice?!? I’m sold! And once again it is Liberian government authorized…thank goodness Liberia authorizes these. We don’t want any counterfit Liberian currency out in circulation.
