Kickass Cupcakes

Now, Hoffa is usually TellHimFred’s resident food critic, but I’m going to take a stab at a review here. See, after a long night of general mayhem, I dropped Hoffa off at his place and decided to check out Kickass Cupcakes in Somerville. I was impressed. I was very impressed.

Here’s the box:

My selection:

(Top Row L to R: Pupcake for dogs, Smores, Chocolate

Bottom Row L to R: Mojito, Red Velvet, Super Chocolate)

Before we tried any, we decided to test these guys out with the harshest critic I know: Steve. Steve is the 2 year old corgi that lives with the lady friend and I. We figured, hell, if Steve likes their cupcakes, they must be safe for us to try. Here’s a closeup of the pupcake, which is a small dog bone, real peanut butter, then some kind of dog safe pseudo-chocolate.

Here’s the video of Steve eating the pupcake from kickass cupcake. If you’re the kind of person that has no interest in watching a dog eat a cupcake, just skip it. I mean, I’m warning you. The entire video is just of a dog eating a cupcake. There’s no punchline. Nothing funny happens. It’s literally a dog eating a cupcake. So don’t tell me it’s a boring/stupid video. I’ve already warned you, so it’s your fault if you watch it.

And here’s a closeup of the s’mores.

So, here’s what I thought on a scale of 0-5.

Presentation: 5 stars. I mean, seriously, take a look at these things.
Taste: 4.5 I tasted a little bit of the s’mores and the chocolate, and they were really incredible.
Texture: 3 They were a little bit dry
Frosting: 5 I had to separate frosting from taste, and the frosting was really, really good.

Overall- 4 Stars

Price: Well, at $2.50 a pop, these cupcakes aren’t cheap, but damn, they’re good.

Here’s the info on Kickass Cupcakes. They’re available both in-store and by delivery in the Boston-area, and they’ll ship anywhere.

I thought the S’mores cupcake needed s’more chocolate frosting. (Ha, see what I did there s’more? Huh, huh?!? Ah, they can’t all be home runs…)

Anyway, who doesn’t like watching a dog eat a cupcake? Not anyone I would associate myself with. Especially when that dog is STEVE!!!

Had the Mojito cupcake tonight at work. Meh. I can’t say I was too impressed. The cupcake to frosting ratio was a little off and the actual cake part really lacked flavor while the frosting was overwhelmingly minty/almost lemony.

I guess the overall lesson is stick to cupcakes flavored like desserts, not drinks.
