This Is Not A Waaambulance- A Hero After The George Clinton Show

February 25th, 2009 by Barry Freed · 1 Comment

Tonight was a night I’ve been looking forward to for a long time: George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic at the House of Blues. The show was excellent, of course, but that’s not what this post is about.

After the show, we walked to my car, which was parked on Boylston Street in front of some chicken wing joint. There was a gentleman who looked to be sleeping on the ground in front of the place.

“Sir!!!!! Call 911!!! Please, sir, I can’t BREATHE!!!!!” he yelled.

Now, I don’t like to go around calling myself a hero, but I was faced with a difficult decision. Do I just ignore the fellow and go home? Do I call and wait around for at least 20 minutes or so to make sure he gets the help I need?

Come on, man. Of course I called. There was really no choice.

I called 911 and let them know where we were. In no more than 3 minutes an ambulance arrived. The two gentlemen came out of the ambulance and after a little bit of convincing, they got the guy into the back of the ambulance.

Minutes later, one of the EMTs came over to talk to me. He said “This guy is the biggest fucking faker I’ve ever heard in my life. Jesus Christ, this is an ambulance, not a waaaaaambulance.”

Wow. So apparently this guy does this all the time, and I felt like kind of a moron for even calling, but the EMT at least reassured me that I’d done the right thng.

Would you have called?

“Now, I don’t like to go around calling myself a hero”
Really? I might remind you of a little episode a couple of years ago where you were also giving yourself the title of hero…can’t remember specifics, but I vaguely remember the Bonnie Tyler song being sung at some point.
